The process of painting embodies moments of decision.
The surface responds to each brushstroke. Art education, painting experience, intuition, body reaction, call to the unknown, etc., these factors entangled and wrestled on the surface, and they ebb and flow to shape the direction of the painting. The artist's dexterity and flaws leave traces in the picture, whether it is sophisticated or frivolous, jerky or slick, complacent or naive and clumsy, all clearly revealed. The previous stroke leads to the next, and each stroke forms a new pictorial logic and force field. The painter experience ups and downs in each stroke, because each stroke requires a decision.
The hardship of painting is that every stroke has a consequence, and this consequence is not the only one. Because painting also faces the bifurcation of time, where there are many paths. The destination is inclusive, or even unreachable. There are many assumptions about how to start a painting. The painting process is full of variables. There are many possibilities to shape a picture. Every decision is to move forward on a new time branch.
Faced with the bifurcation of time, painting can be hesitant. Hesitation leaves room for thinking and breathing and is the suspension of the result. The hesitation must be followed by a decision in any case, which resolutely generates one's answer. This is an artist's unshirkable responsibility.
