“From 2005 to 2021, I mainly created two series of works, ‘Reading' and 'Dust', which changed the way I explore the language of painting. I used simple expressions and repetitive labor to achieve the transformation of concepts. This is the core of my work. The concept flashes by and the meaning is all in the transformative process of labor.” (Zhang Zhenyu, 2021)

Zhang has been working on "Dust" series since 2011. He glued dust on canvas and polished it. Repeating this process, layers were superimposed through time and labor. The picture eventually appeared a mirror-like effect.

Zhang explained, “dust is the material closest to us, the most natural material, and it is everywhere. With our breathing, it enters the body's circulation. It falls quietly and accumulates. It is very thick and dirty, but it is so light that you ignore it. In the era of rapid development of urban civilization, the dust has become very complex. It is no longer pure natural dust. It is dross, desire, disease, and despair..."

Sanding and polishing the fallen dust over and over again. Superimposing and grinding away, layer by layer, gradually, the surface glowed with an amber luster with a texture similar to lacquer. When all the labor comes to an abrupt end, the surface is smooth and silent, the illusion of reality reflected in its warmth. What do you see through it? Dust in the air? The afterglow of the setting sun that shines into the room? The dust in the light is even more real. The dust, the mixture, the breath of the world, the residue, the filth, and the haze shrouded in the light, destined to be rejected, erased, trivial, the hidden disease of modern life and lesions. A strand of a mirror bright, where can the dust alight.
