Mocube is honoured to present Luan Xueyan’s latest exhibition ‘Tuī Jiān Rǔ’, on the 26th of March, 2022. This exhibition will run until May 15, 2022.

The exhibition includes the works selected from the ‘Urban Village’ series (2018-) in the ‘Small Landscape’ project (1997-). This project spanning many years was extracted from what I saw in my travels between the country and the cities. However, it was not a record of the fieldwork. The villages in the hinterland of modern cities are in close contact with the external rapid urbanization, especially in the economically developed areas of the Pearl River Delta. In the past few years, I have started to temporarily reside in these urban villages.

‘Tuī Jiān Rǔ’ was the only three words left at the entrance of an anonymous street shop in Nanshan, Shenzhen. These words were completely out of grammar and logic and were not even worth reading. One can recognize the guess the business content. This is the function of the ‘eye’.

The ‘eye’ and reason collaborate forming a bidirectional input/output structure. The ‘eye’ seems always to work spontaneously, which directly formats what we see in the vast field into an outburst that clearly comes from reason but is completely unmanageable. Information is automatically captured, transformed and generated by the ‘eye’ in a second, and it has nothing to do with how I look at it. Conversely, the insistence on basic painting skills seems to reveal the unshakable power of the rational CPU. In this case, I am only an intermediary.
