"An insect is as complex and wonderful as the universe."
– Lai Jinna
For more than ten years, Lai has lived and worked in a valley of Miyun district, staying away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The valley is about 80 kilometers away from the center of Beijing. Lai and her family are almost in a world of their own. Raising rabbits, sheep and poultry, planting fruits, vegetables, grain and various crops, such as peanuts, corn and sweet potatoes. They are self-sufficient in most everyday supplies.
Lai’s works are the product of her mode of existence. She depicts insects, livestock, fruits, and vegetables that exist in the valley using pencils and ballpoint pens. These particular objects are presented in a subtle and abstract way through Lai’s meticulous use of lines. It has become her daily task and practice for self-cultivation.
Life in the village is in line with the order of nature. The exhibition borrows the name ‘Aranya’, which originally meant wild forests.
