Artists: Zheng Jiang
Mocube is honoured to present the latest exhibition of artist Zheng Jiang Burning Pagoda opening on April 8, 2023. The exhibition will run until May 14, 2023.
The Burning Pagoda, also known as the Protecting Children Tower or the Infants Tower, originated in the late Qing Dynasty. Located in the wilderness far from the village, the hexagonal stone house was built with a small opening on the side. During difficult times, such as famine, plague, and poor medical conditions in rural areas of Zhejiang province, infants who died shortly after birth would be wrapped in clothes and thrown into the hole in the tower before dawn by their families.
In this exhibition, Zheng Jiang will use the Burning Pagoda as a point of departure to explore the relationship between the physical body, space and human nature by reflecting on this historical architecture.
This exhibition is the third part of the ‘Grottoes Trilogy’ by artist Zheng Jiang, following Feitsui in 2019 and Earth Pearls in 2021. The artist uses the keywords of Feitsui - region and kinship, Earth Pearls - survival and destiny, and Burning Pagoda - physical body and space as the theme, borrowing tuff, a material that is closely related to his own growth as a storyline to construct a complete art project.
