Artists: Yan Zhou
Mocube is pleased to announce artist Yan Zhou’s solo exhibition, “Coping Mechanism” opening on May 18, 2019, and the exhibition will continue to July 8, 2019.
“Coping Mechanism” (or translated literally from Chinese, making some arrow overnight" suggests the seemingly proactive thinking or actions in an urgent or disadvantage circumstance is not necessarily saving against a rainy day.
With three works on view, We need to make some arrows overnight, Interim measures, and Calling on Mr. Shigeru Ban, Yan Zhou presented a series of feedback addressing immediate realities which include unique social circumstances and cultural ecology, how an individual would confront these ever-changing conditions, and how to initiate coping measures, how to conceive one's behavioral and emotional pathways prior to and post-crisis?
At the same time, the artist approach to bring together various spatial units into memory pathways to access the here and now, as well as the there and then: the elevator after an earthquake, the cave before a disaster, the tent as temporary shelters, boats, train cart, and the imaginary and protective temporal and spatial ways. These spaces provide access to the past and immediate moments of crisis, like the blocks in a stream bifurcating the current and interrupting our memories.
